Sheltering below the plunging walls of the Great Rift Valley lies the quintessentially serene Lake Manyara Tented Camp, tucked in an evergreen forest on bird-rich Lake Manyara. Lake Manyara National Park is where Ernest Hemingway camped on the hunting safari that inspired his book, Green Hills of Africa.
THE MODERN SCAVENGING MACHINE
During our morning game drive we had a wonderful sighting of this rare vulture (Palm Nut Vulture) feasting on a buffalo carcass. These birds are known as fruit and fish eaters but in Lake Manyara you can see how much they are eating on red meat. They've completely joined the side of other meat eating scavengers like jackals, hyenas and other vultures. As a new competitor on the scene these vultures were not entirely welcome, but this bird was there biting at the carcass anyway. It was unbelievable!
