Home Sightings India Wildlife Baghvan Tigress leads the way...
 |
Baghvan
Baghvan is aptly named after one of India's iconic symbols, the Bengal tiger (bagh - tiger and van - forest). This enchanting lodge is located on the edge of Pench National Park, a dry deciduous forest of predominantly teak trees and meandering jungle streams.
A typical Central Indian teak jungle, Pench supports a rich variety of wildlife, including the tiger, leopard, wild dog, gaur, sambar, chital and brilliant birdlife. The Park's open habitat not only lends well to wildlife viewing, but it also offers striking views of the area's sheer beauty. This national park received international recognition from Rudyard Kipling's classic tale, the Jungle Book.

Tigress leads the way...
It was 6:00 am, and we were the first ones to enter the National Park. I was taking veteran CC Africa guests Sue and Allen Prince on their first drive in an Indian jungle. They are keen wildlifers and were hoping to see a tiger.
There were some spotted deer alarm calls as we were driving up to the Park gate. Once inside, I told my guests we'd go in the direction of the alarm calls to investigate. As I turned around to face the road, I saw this this tigress make her way towards the road! I did a double take and looked again to ensure it was a tiger before I showed it to the guests. By that time she had made it to the track and was coming up ahead of me on the road.
I pointed her out to the guests and everyone stared in disbelief. We were about three and a half minutes into our drive! I gave the tigress a headstart of a few minutes and slowly followed her for about 3 kms. She was out marking her territory. She made scrape and scat marks on the ground and scent marked trees. Every now and then she would turn around to glance at us. She was calm and unhurried. Needless to say we were in a sort of a trance the rest of the day! :)It was a maginificent sighting and everyone got great shots.
Sue kindly gave me this picture to put on wildwatch.
