In the heart of Maasai territory on the north-eastern boundary of the Serengeti National Park is a private concession of 10 000 hectares, set aside for the exclusive use of Klein's Camp's 20 guests. The spectacular location of the camp on the edge of the Kuka Hills commands sweeping views across a broad valley through which the annual great migration passes.
Unusual growing of elephant's tusk!
We had a great sighting of a female elephant near Mburuke. This female has a tusks growing backward that she can not debark the tree as other elephants do.So she has to use force by chasing away the elephants that has just debark the acacia tree to eat the white layer called Cambium. This layer in a tree is very essential and rich in nutrients and it is used as a medicine both by human and wild animals as well. In human, in the Masai society the acacia tree can treat many diseases including malaria, the roots and barks of acacia tree are very useful. We still have many elephants in the area and it is unbelivable what they do to the tree.As you drive around your eyes will be caught with the shinning white bark of these acacia tree. It was very interesting to watch this female as she chased other elephants to get access eating the cambium layer and sometimes we felt so sorry as she cannot do by herself. So she has to wait to see which elephants has finished debarking the tree so that she can run there and eat the cambium.
