Home Sightings India Wildlife Baghvan wild dogs on a kill!
 |
Baghvan
Baghvan is aptly named after one of India's iconic symbols, the Bengal tiger (bagh - tiger and van - forest). This enchanting lodge is located on the edge of Pench National Park, a dry deciduous forest of predominantly teak trees and meandering jungle streams.
A typical Central Indian teak jungle, Pench supports a rich variety of wildlife, including the tiger, leopard, wild dog, gaur, sambar, chital and brilliant birdlife. The Park's open habitat not only lends well to wildlife viewing, but it also offers striking views of the area's sheer beauty. This national park received international recognition from Rudyard Kipling's classic tale, the Jungle Book.

wild dogs on a kill!
We were driving around in a dense part of the national park, when we came upon a couple of wild dogs trotting beside the track! We followed them slowly and to our immense delight came upon the rest of the pack.....20 of them!! This was one of the largest packs Id seen. They looked in prime condition with a really rich colour and glossy coats.
The pack had surrounded a cheetal (spotted deer) stag. The wild dogs kept trying to bite the stag in turns. The stag would try to defend himself and as soon as he turned he would get bitten from the back. He was bleeding and gradually began to slacken in his defence.
It was heart stopping to see this act unfold in front of us. Though we couldnt help pitying the stag, it was magnificent to watch the strategy of the wild dogs and they way the pack communicated with calls that sound like whistles.
