Madikwe Safari Lodge is situated in the heart of the richly diverse and malaria-free 76 000-hectare (187 800-acre) Madikwe Game Reserve – one of South Africa’s biggest wildlife sanctuaries. Famed for Operation Phoenix, the world’s largest game translocation exercise with the introduction of more than 8 000 animals, Madikwe’s diverse geology and broad mix of habitats allows a wide range of African wildlife to flourish – including the Big Five, cheetah and a thriving population of wild dog.
wild dogs on the up
Madikwe has always been known for our good wild dog viewing over the past number of years. Towards the beginning of the year things took a little turn for the worse when the two packs bumped into each other and 3 out of the pack of 4 were killed. During this time the wild dog situation wasn’t looking to good for South Africa and there were no more dogs available to bond with this. Luckily nature tends to sort itself and 3 females from our pack of 21 broke away and joined this male to create our new pack. Since then they have found a perfect den not to far from our lodge and for the first time a week ago they revealed their little youngsters. Six tiny little dogs appeared and started to suckle in front of us for a short period of time. Over the pass week their confidence has grown and we seeing the now pack of 10 every drive around the den playing and having the time of there live
