Xaranna
&Beyond's Xaranna Tented Camp is situated near a permanent channel of the Okavango Delta in 25 000 hectares of pristine wilderness that is shared by only 18 guests. The Camp boasts breathtaking views of the channel, providing guests with a water and wilderness experience that combines the best of what the Okavango has to offer. Birders should watch out for the elusive Pel's fishing owl, while the endangered African wild dog and semi-aquatic red lechwe are endemic to the area.

So often we miss the smaller or shall I say less "impressive" animals that tends to be the antelope. This Reedbuck seems like something common around the Okavango Delta , but in actual fact, we do not see them all that often at all. Take note next time you see a Reedbuck in the Delta.

A male lion was spotted on the far end of our concession in December 2011. He is obviously not viewed frequently as he was very skittish and could not be viewed at close range. This lion resembles the true "wild" side of the Okavango Delta , and the fact that there are many unexplored areas and Islands. With a picnic and a day of exploring,...

On an early morning drive recently, Cecil (our anti-poaching unit) spotted two lions on a buffalo kill. Amazing to think that a young male lion and lioness can pull down a beastly large buffalo.

I'm not sure how to explain this incredible "leopard luck" that has befallen Xaranna . We have been viewing leopard on a weekly basis and at times even daily. The cooler rains that the summer brings definitely plays a large role in their appearance as they do not need to shy away from the sun. Rainy weather can also be condusive to good hunting...

Whilst staying at Xaranna you might want to experience the wildlife in a different way? Well, Horseback Safaris which is situated a stone throw away from us will bring the horses to our camp for you to ride. This is an exciting alternative in which to view animals as they do not shy away from the horses.

The most beautiful zebra can be seen whilst on game drive in the denser more nutritious growth. They prefer the new shoots and will very seldom graze in the open, but rather with other antelope such as impala or wildebeest.

In the summer months (and sometimes winter) one can find the elephants swimming in the channels of the Okavango Delta . They are truly like children when playing together in the water. This is always a highlight for me to see.

Recently (or more specifically in the last 5 months), we have been lucky enough to see large herds of buffalo. They are incredibly shy and hide themselves very well for such a large mass. The best way to spot these are from the sky in a helicopter, but as mentioned, we have been viewing them from the vehicle as of late.

This pair of African Fish Eagles stay very close to camp patroling the channels for fish. I am glad not to be in the market for "tree tops" in the Delta along these channels as there are already quite a few Fish Eagles to be seen.
