At this time of the year you will find large herds of elephants around Xudum and Xaranna . The old bulls can often be found in the floodplains eating the tubers of the water lilies. These tubers are very sort after and it’s not uncommon to see baboons wading into the water with a watchful eye for crocodiles to collect them. The local communities...

With the waters receding a bit in the wait for the summer rains to fall and exposing the tips of the short green grass, there has been an increase in Lesser Jacana sightings. The Delta is a strong hold for this species.

Recently while driving around Xudum to one of my favorite spots, with big Baobabs, we stumbled upon this spectacle. The Carmine Bee-eaters are attracted to this spot because of the abundance of insects and short grass for their nesting sight.

It has been years since we saw a pangolin. When we saw it, it put on a show for us, curling itself to make a round shape and this was an amaizing experience for our guests. By Thapelo and Tshenolo.

So it was with not much hope that I scanned the green foliage for the tell tale brown feathers - and this time got lucky - a beautiful Pel's Fishing Owl at last! It's not a great picture but...

We saw three Pel's fishing owls on our morning boat cruise today - very exciting. They have been seen in the same area for the last week.

On a Wednesday morning we went out specifically to look for birds. Everyone had their pair of binoculars, scanning the trees from a distance and suddenly we saw a leopard cub in the tree together with the mother on a different branch. We got a bit closer because they were so relaxed and spent some time with them. They were the highlights of the morning....

Anybody who visits Xudum in the next couple of months should keep an eye out for a pair of African Barred Owlet's that seem to be living near room 8. During my stay I often heard and admired the pair but it was on the last day that I managed to photograph one of them. It was so relaxed, sitting low in a tree, allowing me to stand within 5 metres of it....
